Thailand:Ageing population boosts life insurance demand

| 04 Aug 2026

Thailand's rapidly ageing population and rising healthcare costs are driving sustained growth in the country's life insurance market, with increasing consumer awareness of health and financial planning supporting premium growth.

Thailand is undergoing a significant demographic shift as declining birth rates, increasing life expectancy and a shrinking workforce push the country towards a super-aged society.

According to the National Savings Fund, Thailand's birth rate has remained below its death rate for five consecutive years, with people aged 60 and above expected to account for more than 28% of the population within the next decade.

While advances in medical technology have extended life expectancy, they have also increased the number of years many people spend living with illness.

The 2026 Thai Health Report, published by the Thai Health Promotion Foundation and the Institute for Population and Social Research at Mahidol University, found that Thais spend an average of 6.9 years in poor health towards the end of their lives, increasing demand for long-term healthcare services.

The ageing population is also contributing to rising medical costs.

According to the National Economic and Social Development Council, growing demand for healthcare services is fuelling medical inflation.

Private health insurance data indicates that Thailand's medical inflation rate reached 10.8% in 2025, significantly exceeding the country's general inflation rate of 0.7% and remaining above the projected global medical inflation rate of 10.3% for 2026.

Against this backdrop, demand for life and health insurance has continued to strengthen as consumers seek protection against rising healthcare expenses and longevity-related financial risks.

According to the Thai Life Assurance Association, total life insurance premiums reached THB341.5bn ($10.4bn) in the first half of 2026, up 4.57% from the same period a year earlier.

Consumer behaviour is also evolving, with policyholders increasingly viewing life insurance not only as protection against unforeseen events but also as a tool for long-term financial planning and risk management.
