Taiwan:National health insurance premiums will remain unchanged in 2026

Taiwan's National Health Insurance (NHI) premiums will remain unchanged in 2026 according to an announcement by the National Health Insurance Committee.

According to a news story in the news portal ocacnews.net, the committee’s executive secretary Ms Chou Shuwan told media persons that the general premium rate will stay at 5.17% in 2026. Ms Shuwan was addressing a media briefing in Taipei after the monthly meeting of the committee.

She said the NHI reserves are projected to stand at the equivalent of about two months of expenditures by the end of 2026 -- above the legally required minimum of one month.

The committee comprises of representatives from government agencies, healthcare providers and labour groups. It is the policymaking body responsible for overseeing the financial planning and premium-setting mechanisms of the NHI system and functions under Taiwan’s ministry of health and welfare.

All four sectors secured the maximum approved growth rate of 5.5%, bringing next year's total NHI budget to NT$988.3bn ($32bn).

The 2026 budget allocates NT$685.3bn for hospitals, NT$186.2bn for primary care clinics, NT$58.3bn  for dental services, and NT$36.4bn for traditional Chinese medicine. Other related expenditures will total NT$22bn, an increase of NT$1.1bn from this year.
