Nepal:Health insurance services to be made more accessible and efficient

| 21 Jul 2025

The over 9.3m insured individuals covered under the Nepalese government's health insurance scheme will now be able to access these health insurance services with better convenience. The services will also be made more efficient and citizen friendly.

The Nepalese Health Insurance Board has announced that the members of the government’s health insurance scheme can now receive treatment from any healthcare facilities listed in the Board’s First Service Point list. Nepal has 377 public hospitals across the country.

The new customer friendly services have already been started across the country from July 2025. The policyholders can receive the healthcare services from anywhere in the country regardless of their place of residence.

The health insurance programme was launched in 2016 and has been providing healthcare services to the poor Nepalese citizens.

The Nepalese government has set a target to increase the renewal of health insurance policies to 90% by 2030.

According to the 16th edition of the National Plan Report issued by the country’s Planning Commission. According to the report, which covers the fiscal years 2024/25 – 2028/29, the health insurance renewal rate in 2024 was 69%.

Nepal's Health Insurance Reform Suggestion Task Force set up in October 2024 has recommended that the government employees and the employees working in the private organised sector pay 1% of their annual salary to the health insurance fund and an equal amount is paid by the employer.

Also, the task force has suggested that the benefit under the scheme currently up to NPR100,000 be increased to NPR500,000. The task force has suggested that the current amount does not provide much support in the treatment of most of the incurable and serious diseases.
